What can The Program do for research host?

Usually student volunteers and observers show up at busy hospitals and medical practices unprepared and unable to help. It follows that they are often relegated to a “passive bystander” role and often are regarded as “time wasters”. It is our contention that with proper training and supervision, these optimistic, hard-working students can make a positive contribution to an institution’s research efforts. The Student Research Scholar Program’s mission is “to facilitate mutually beneficial relationships between interested and worthy students and medical research opportunities by providing training and support- before, during and after their engagement”.

Our goal and expertise is to:

  • Help the medical institution identify clinical and research opportunities that are well-suited for student research scholar participation.

  • Help define the goal of the project so it is clear to both student and host, and realistic.

  • Take the burden from the host to prepare the student in advance so that they can quickly make meaningful contributions to their chosen project and become a valued team member by:

    • Working with the host to acquire relevant credentials for Electronic Medical Records (EMR), patient interaction, IRB approval where applicable, and more

    • Training the student in navigation in and relevant data extraction from the EMR

    • Training the student in HIPAA and other relevant regulations and concerns regarding patient privacy and data security

    • Training the student in the basic medical knowledge required to successfully accomplish the project goal

    • Training the student in how to interact with medical staff, patients and families

    • Training the student in how to prepare and deliver presentations

Areas that are well-suited for student research scholar contribution include:

  • Atrial Fibrillation with database work in TRAC-AF database

  • Aortic Valve Disease with database work in the Trans-catheter Valve Registry (TVR)

  • Cardiac and thoracic surgery with database work in the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) database

Let us help you help students while also helping your own research efforts.
